Nuvi 855: remaining Value, in spite of many shortcomings,
June 11, 2009

By&nbsp, nuvifan Redmond, WA See all my reviews

This is an unusually long product review, but I just could not help but brag about the Nuvi 855, also as express some number of complaints about Garmin shortcomings.

Pros and Cons of the Garmin Nuvi 855

PROs: Custom routing, easy setting unit options, responsiveness to my spoken commands, fast map scrolling via finger movement, Lane help arrows are helpful, map detail is better than on the 755/765, place names appear on screen as you drive, broad and easy use to use Points of Interest database, and POIs may be displayed on map if you decide.

CONs: Volume needs to be louder, warnings of forthcoming turns should come sooner, inadequate online manual gives inadequate detail about unit operations,, can not really turn unit completely OFF, Lane help displays are limited, important learning curve obliged to confidently program ANY Garmin to react as the user wants.

Primary GPS function and Recent Nuvi Ownership

I greatly recommend the Nuvi 855, but my perspective is mainly depending on three road trips, using its Custom Routing feature, plus recent experience with two other Nuvis. My major function was to create particular routes before trips, like eight driving days averaging 500 miles each, on unfamiliar highways and city streets and also finding McDonalds when we wanted. I benefited tremendously from the strange experience of using a Garmin 760 for a month last year, then newly driving 4,000 miles with a more advanced 755.But returned it to get this remaining value in an 855. I have since used the 855 on a one week trip and completely expect the bulk of its features to work as they have on the earlier 760 and 755.

We don’t need Bluetooth due to our pre installed car option, nor the free Traffic alert service found it usually useless in 755, nor the 3 D buildings or Eco path features in other Garmins. Possibly commuters could enjoy the Traffic service in other Nuvis, but our restricted highway trip experience found it alerted unnecessarily, and offered unhelpful detour advice: We thought it an interesting gimmick, but which Garmin may well improve over time.

Low Volume

Many reviewers complain the 855 volume is so low as to justify returning their units. Really, low volume can be the common complaint seen online among all Nuvis. My wife and I agree that volume on the 760/755/855 is too low, but we have never missed a turn because of it: We typically anticipate when an vital voice instruction is coming, and turn down the stereo and close windows to “listen harder.” it is a slight bother, but that major flaw is worth overlooking. Everyone should be sure to check both possible “Volume” settings: the major one should be at 100 volume, but also set “Mixer” to have all three volume modifications at 100. One other learned trick is that users can press the “Next Turn” arrows upper left corner, and hear again the forthcoming turn instruction, also as have it display the forthcoming intersection simultaneously. I nearly generally check the “next turn” instruction well before forthcoming turns, I also find it useful to press the green text line at the top of the map screen to display a summary of some number of forthcoming turns on my path. This practice should prove useful with many other Nuvi models.

Low volume is a distinct Garmin flaw, but we enjoyed the 755 for 4,000 miles in spite of it. We typically had many wind sound with the sunroof and rear windows open, but could close them IF necessary when we anticipated receiving an instruction, like at the .8 mile mark before a turn, we usually pressed the screen to re hear an instruction, also as to view the turn well beforehand. I urge others to work to overcome the volume issue. And move on to take pleasure in the other benefits of an 855. We think the 855 volume is just as usable as our last units. But, I do intend to download a liked voice editor, which other Nuvi holders bragged about, because it lets them increase the volume of spoken information.

Lane help and connection View

855 purchasers should also be aware that Lane help and connection View are much complained about Garmin features, caused by the fact that they’re mainly available only in big metropolitan regions and on interstate highways. In spite of that, we enjoyed the 755 Lane help many turn lane arrows coming out many times throughout our trip through Salt Lake, Phoenix, Tucson, and San Diego, and found it useful. We wished connection View pictures of the green interstate highway signs appeared more frequently, but thought them usually needless except passing through Portland area @ I 205 and I 5 interchanges, where they were helpful. I expect 855 service to be same,

Remote Control Voice Command

My wife and I are tremendously happy with the 855 Remote Command function and expect that it’ll be useful in future driving, also as a nice diversion to play with. The remote responded FAR better in our road testing than I may have imagined, it’s much safer than the manual modifications I was earlier making while driving stupid man tricks at 70 MPH are a thing of the past!.

I compiled my own list of the remote Voice Commands, and has been surprised to find some number of that aren’t in the manual. Nearly any menu instruction may be given by voice, making the 855 more working than projected. You may be surprised to learn that the following commands also work: Yes, No, Back, Page Up/Down, Scroll Up/Down, Clear, and Delete. I have also discovered that “Next Turn” will repeat the spoken instruction for the forthcoming turn, this is useful to check many miles before your turn. Once the “Next Turn” graphic is displayed, the user can command successive forthcoming turns to be displayed and spoken. Among my favorite commands are “Zoom In” and “Zoom Out,” instead of reaching and pressing on the screen while driving. Any sound problems in making ourselves understood are easily overcome, as my co pilot wife can generally intervene with manual operation when we’re moving.

I find it simple to use the Voice Commands, but only because I played with the menu settings manually in three Nuvis. , I can typically interact freely with the 855 Voice Commands, and flow from one screen to another while driving, without letting the remote shut off before I am finished with it. On the other hand, I do wish that the green “On” icon could stay active longer than it does: Keeping an eye on the icons and flicking one’s vision back and forth from the road to menu alternatives is a important distraction, and possibly dangerous. I think it vital to attempt and bound Voice Command use to situations where traffic is light, and oncoming vehicles aren’t present. I attempt to do broad menu functionings by voice for situations where I feel safe diverting my attention from driving, on the other hand, my wife is becoming more comfy at searching through the menus by herself, and enjoys the 855 as much as I.

Routing Accuracy and Points of Interest

Accuracy of our Nuvi information have usually been excellent, as is the broad Point Of Interest POI database and operation. We have had many Garmin map goofs and sporadic mis routing, but have extreme confidence that we’ll be rerouted quickly and properly to fix mistakes we make in taking wrong turns. Depending on our last broad Garmin experience, I expect the same great service with the 855 model.

In contrast to sporadic Nuvi annoyances, one of its best features is the confidence it gives us that whenever we goof up such as missing a turn, when it’ll speak up nearly now with a “recalculation.” likewise, whenever we’re uncertain if we have made a correct turn, the fact that NO “recalculation” occurs gives us confidence that we’re still “on track.” when not on a path, we love being able to drive anywhere unfamiliar, and know that we can just search for a big landmark street or POI.And get ourselves “back to civilization.”

The POIs come in useful in some number of situations that one may not ordinarily think about. For example, when in a weird city, one can find gas stations by brand or chain restaurants, find the way back to your motel, find a close park to relax after a tiring daylong drive, also. It’s also useful to search for places of interest before a trip, and learn how far they’re from your overnight lodging as well as establish a path to them. I find the GPS far easier to find POIs than following information from well meaning strangers.

We were irritated using POI’s to find one McDonalds: Voice command and manual controls via some number of search techniques failed to recognize a McD along our path, and we gave up.Despite being certain there was one close. Twenty miles afterward, upon arrival in the parking lot of a McD, the 855 still couldn’t find it via “Where I’m Now.” We have also experienced slight mistakes in POI places for two other burger places, but both were close enough that we found them anyways. , we learned that Nuvi is not perfect, and learned to reimburse. And “grin and bear” its boo boos.

Learning to Use Any Nuvi

It looks that all big gps brands lack a in depth, printed manual, instead, they supply an online manual. But, online information especially Garmin! are inadequate to completely show all unit capacities and economical use. I have read the online manual for each of my Nuvis, but hate the fact that they’re so incomplete. Garmins have a just total material in the onboard “Help” feature, which is useful when you’re away from your computer. These Help references are brief, but, and.

May be worse than the 7×5 models,
May 10, 2009

By&nbsp,fredf888 CA United States See all my reviews

If you assume the 8×5 models are automatically better than the 7×5 models, you can be surprised based on what features are vital to you.

The most remarkable feature of the 855 is the voice command. Many voice commands, like “volume up”, may be done from any screen. Doing “volume up” on the touch screen could involved five presses: “menu”, “volume”, “+”, “back”, & “view map”. You do have to keep an eye on the screen and speak only after you see the green symbol on the upper right corner. You may be able to speak the name of the place stored in Favorites, like “San Francisco City Hall”. Other systems could have obliged you to speak the line number.

The most disappointing feature of this 855 is the in general sluggishness of the system caused by the voice command system. The screen refreshes gradually in comparison to Nuvi 765’s super smooth refresh. The 855’s CPU is just not fast enough to do voice command and high refresh rate simultaneously. Garmin eliminated the cool 3D building feature from 765, seemingly in an effort to minimize CPU handling. Garmin may have kept the refresh rate high while voice command isn’t being used. But doing so could illuminate the refresh problem more vividly once the user presses the remote button to speak.

To use voice command effectively, you have to turn your car’s audio system volume down before you speak, then back up afterwards. The better solution is to use the 855’s fitted FM transmitter and put your music on a micro SD card. A two GB card is about $7. Nuvi will automatically reduce the music volume throughout voice commands or announcements. But that means you can not listen to regular radio transmits. The FM transmitter worked well in my Toyota Highlander which has a front antenna. But the FM transmitter was totally not usable in my Toyota Prius which has a roof mounted antenna. Many new cars have small roof mounted antennas and most likely won’t work well with 855’s FM transmitter. But, if the new car has an MP3 jack, then you may be able to run a cable from 855’s audio out jack to the car’s MP3 jack.

Update: After using the FM transmitter for some weeks in my Highlander, it did worse than I first thought. Bear in mind that my Nuvi 855 has direct line of sight of my Highlander’s hood mounted antenna. Power lines not close by disrupted the transmission easily and frequently. I dug up my old Iriver FM transmitter and hooked it up to the Nuvi’s audio out jack. The Iriver was way better and louder too. Some number of magazine reviews pointed out that the Nuvi’s FM transmitter has been underpowered now I have to agree. Garmin’s Webupdater log showed an update to the FM transmitter’s firmware to “comply with European standard”. I imagine that meant a reduction of FM transmission power. Tomtom forum also has many posts that recent firmware updates reduced the FM transmission power. Possibly the FCC or the authority in Europe are now more vigilant in checking FM transmitter’s power so cars beside you will not get interference. The bottom line is that you’ll probably be disappointed if you have to use Nuvi’s FM transmitter.

I updated the system software via Webupdater. For many reasons, it unselected the City Navigator map. The next day I used it, it lost voice command and the map had only big highways. A call to technical support solved the problem. Only about seven minutes of wait time and the rep knew now what was wrong. But phone support is only available Monday through Friday.

Bluetooth connectivity isn’t provided in 855, a little surprising considering the price of this model. Routing is excellent and no stupid routes like my last Mio C520. But that’s projected of Garmin. I heard Tomtom is nearly as good now.

I wish Garmin could implement split screen like so many other manufacturers. To me, the map view of the road ahead is more vital than the sides. The left and right edges of the map screen are just wasted real estate. A split screen showing the next two or three turns could have been nice.

The lane help works great but not too many interchanges have that feature incorporated. The photo realistic screen is nice but not that useful. The many arrows representing the different lanes already gave me full info.

The Nuvi 855 isn’t a bad unit. But it does not live up to my expectations. If you value lane help and voice command and your car can work with its FM transmitter or audio out, and you do not mind the sluggish screen refresh rate, then this is a good unit. But, many people can be happier with the “lesser” models with no voice command.

Voice recognition is a must have for GPS!,
May 19, 2009

By&nbsp,Robert Schroeder Scottsdale, AZ See all my reviews

I bought the 855 as an upgrade to my StreetPilot C550. I was unwilling to purchase it, depending on the less than stellar reviews on here, but after using it for a week, I dont have complaints at all. Maybe that is caused by the fact that I am upgrading from the ancient 550, and not the 7X5 series. The other reviewers are right, the on/off switch may be uncomfortable, and you need a fingernail to push it over to the left. But that’s such a minor complaint, I believe. As well, many people say they like the smoother refresh that the 7X5 series has, and this is more jerky, as you move along your path. Well, you are not supposed to be watching it when you are driving anyway. Oh, and it only has 500 waypoints, in comparison to 1000 on other models. I will be lucky if I use 100.

What makes this GPS so extraordinary is the voice recognition! I feel like I am using Star Trek technology. It rarely has any problem understanding what I tell it. Hands free GPS navigation! I never have to pull over to type a new destination or attempt to do it while driving. I can not imagine any of the minor complaints offsetting the awesomeness of the voice recognition. Now that it is available, I would not have a GPS unit without it. If your budget lets for a voice recognition GPS with 1000 waypoints, an improved on/off switch, and smoother screen refresh, then by all means get that one. But if you are wanting to use up about $300, and want voice recognition, don’t hesitate to purchase the 855. I would not exchange it for a non voice recognition unit that has those features that this one lacks.

Garmin nvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Description:
This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished usually means that the unit was returned to the maker, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Many GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.

Garmin’s n&uuml,vi 255W improvesupon its 200 series predecessors by adding top of the line features like FM traffic updates or MSN Direct content to an entry level line. But Garmin is introducing many important enhancements with this new series, like a predictive technology that gives faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more info, terrain maps, and an thrilling new photo navigation feature. The 255W adds complete maps for North America and Text to Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets e.G. “turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way”, rather than just “turn left in 50 feet”. The 255W also offers a large 4.3 inch diagonal screen that displays 70 more of the road around you.The n&uuml,vi 2×5 models all sport the thin design that Garmin presented with the 200 series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.
Vital Product Information: This device features a “screen lock” feature. This is a regular feature on all n&uuml,vi 2×5 and 7×5 Garmin units. If you slide the “Power” key to the right, it’ll lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the “Power” key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for “Pedestrian” mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously.
Garmin’s interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub screens make it simple to enter or search for places and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and n&uuml,vi takes you there with turn by turn voice directions, 2 D or 3 D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate.

This year, Garmin redesigned its interface to include more useful info.
Old Interface New Interface
New HotFix&trade, &ndash, aka: Satellite Ephemeris Data Prediction
Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites to find out its position. Till the device gets a “lock” on three satellites, it can not effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get “satellite lock” is generally a objective of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin’s new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it’s tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and considerably decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to three days after the device was last turned off.

Using Garmin&rsquo,s distinctive website &mdash, Garmin Connect Photos &mdash, users can decide from millions of geo located photos offered by Google&rsquo,s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the n&uuml,vi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.
New Navigate by Photo

Because traffic transmits are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you may be able to still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.
A 3 month subscription to TMC Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network is included with the receiver. For more info on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin web site.
Widescreen See More of what is Around The super bright, 4.3 inch diagonal touchscreen display gives is anti glare for easy looking at throughout the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy looking at at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70 more real screen area than a 3.5 inch screen. Mainly this translates into a better view of the area through which you’re driving. This is particularly useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. Are close, or in letting you know if a detour is a smart idea. As well, the device itself is bigger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push. Wider screen allows you to see more of what is around. Compare these real size views of a 3 inch diagonal screen

Was exactly what I looked for. Widescreen unit that spoke the real street name at a budget price. Was first shopping on auction websites but Garmin’s one year warranty does not support refurbished units sold on auction websites. Was afraid about it being a refurbished unit, but so far no issues. I have updated the software and downloaded the new maps, all without issue. Does not come in a cool retail box, but does include the mount and suction cup. Depending on my experience, I could recommend the unit to a friend.

I projected this unit to be able to help me find the best routes, points of interest, etc. It is comparatively intuitive to use, and, unlike a competing brand which I sent back was able to find it is initial place now, with great ease. I am having many of fun with it as I am learning how to use it. Many of the reviews I had read thought the voice on the text speech feature irritating. I LIKE it. The tone and pitch are right on for my ears. As well, it is able to pronounce what I think about to be hard street names with ease and precision. The nicest surprise about it’s that this little navigator can tell you the speed bound for each street or highway you are on, also as show you how fast you’re going relative to the speed bound. That is more valuable to me than a radar detector could be. It also tells you your anticipated arrival time, which it changes for traffic slow downs. The 255W has a 4.3 inch screen, which is quite easy to see from my dashboard as I am driving. Do not attempt to change menus or find points of interest while you’re driving!! This is more diverting than texting while driving. You’ll have to pull over to find these things, unless you have a passenger who may help you with this. This limitation could disappear if it may accept voice commands. All things considered, this unit is perfect for my needs now. It is also movable and can slip into my purse with ease when I’m walking in an unfamiliar area. My only wish could be that it had bluetooth connectivity, but that is an easy work around with a bluetooth earpiece.
Good job Garmin,
October 9, 2008

REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

&nbsp,&nbsp,

I will address what was my biggest apprehension in going for an ad established, free traffic program. No issue! The ads are small and not at all intrusive. My eyes never were pulled in a way that was a distraction. I can envision the not many instances that it may benefit both the advertiser and the user. If you think about it . Newspaper, radio, internet, TV . Marketing is much a part of our culture and in this case tastefully done.

Before more review, good grief . Now I sound like a sports caster, I should say that I have owned GPS units forever. Started with laptop programs then I started purchasing all of my vehicles with factory GPS. Acura, Toyota’s two of em over the years have all been GPS equipped. I travel many for work and it was just more convenient to own stand alone movable units when I rent auto’s. Magellan and Garmin were my last two movable units. I am not a nerd or engineer so I will give this my best shot and hope the average Jill and Joe will get something out of this.

Next, I will talk about routing and traffic. Garmin in my opinion has generally been rock hard by routing. With this unit they have taken the art to a new level. I looked at the new TomTom with its smart routing and nearly pulled the trigger on that unit but, with what happened today I’m not one bit sorry with my choice. This morning I had to make deliveries to some Lowe’s Home Improvement stores in the Metro Phoenix, AZ market. I went to the “Points of interest” icon typed in Lowe’s and after a short wait has been rewarded with all of the Lowes stores in the neighborhood. I touch on every one and saved it to a sub group I made Lowes Metro Phoenix, gave each their proper store number the search came complete with address and phone , then scheduled my day. From home to the factory 1st, then to four stores, then back to the factory. Throughout the day I had to put another unscheduled stop. Fantastic! If I may have asked for any improvement here it could have been that each way point was somehow shown as I progressed. It did announce my arrival at each place complete with what side of the street it could be on, in the long run I’m so happy with the result that I could not bring myself to diminish the five star ranking. As well, at each stop when I turned the car off the unit powered down. When I got back in the car I required to go to the “custom routes” icon, where I built my path, and touch the button to activate my named path. Garmin, if that may be auto I could love it . And maybe down the road I will learn something that I do not still know and this unit is able. Honestly, it was so fast and easy and the routing picked up right where it left off so not a big deal to me. Traffic most likely should have own paragraph except it ties into the routing. I understand that this is reliant on how your town is covered. Here in Phoenix only the big highways are covered. I present that if you have to travel inner belts and outer belts also as the highways in and out of your towns you’ll be happy. I watched the traffic icon turn from green to yellow to red and back again as road conditions changed. The icon showed how long the delay could be and if you touch it, it shows where and how far away! Garmin gave me the choice to bypass each delay but when I answered yes with the touch of the button it reminded me that my path had been optimized as well as all other alternatives . With the delay it still had me on the fastest path. Because I had many places it kept me posted to the delays in the reverse directions when my routing could require back tracking.

There was slow downs along the way and one accident and I was informed well in advance. With the accident, I passed the place about 15 minutes after notice. It was minor and had been moved to the side of the highway still I could see the remnants of broken head lights in the lane it happened. I has been prepared to be disappointed with the traffic because not all the traffic reviews are free. Again, I tend to feel where you live and the roads you travel could influence your opinion. For me, I could add extra stars here if I could. It amazed me when it routed me a different way from the factory to my house different from the one I took in the morning because the road conditions were different. It was right on depending on years of living and driving these roads.

The Voice and the timeliness of prompts were strong. I tried all the voices and ended up with Australian Karen. She’s understandable in “text to speech” and nice. My wife likes her . I’d like to meet Australian Karen someday but she would not give me her phone number . Like my wife could like her if she did! With my Magellan I liked the way it could ding just before the turn. This Garmin states the turn and the timing was comparable to the Magellan and that’s a good thing. Many of the last Garmin models had problems in this area if you read the posts. As well, volume with the unit on external speaker was OK to Good, I’d like to see it a touch louder for times when road sound or blasting AC is an issue. I haven’t tried piping it with FM to my radio and most likely will not.

On my wish list to Garmin you think they read these?, I’d like to see a bit more info around the edges of the screen. You may be able to program the “arrival time” button for things like altitude, time, direction of travel and many more, but you can not program the “speed button” for anything. I’d like to see my altitude . Just for giggles, and my ETA. Who needs the time with clocks in the car & on every cell phone? Who needs to know how fast you’re going with a speedometer in every car? I could also like to know the street I am now on. On occasion you may be able to see it based on how you’re zoomed to the map but on occasion not. I’d also like to know what direction I am traveling in without hitting another button or giving up my ETA or 3d view. The speed bound of each street is a great thing to have particularly when your in regions you do not know or rural roads that go for miles without a sign. I can tell you that when the speed bound changed as I entered different zones the changes were correct in their timing.

The last thing for today’s review is lane guidance. I went thru many pretty big interchanges today and not once did I see the Navagon style or Garmin advertised kind of full screen preview. Again, I will see if there’s a setting I missed or I’ll just have to live with what I have got for awhile. I understand that Garmin will be adding to their data base as they go along. What I did see though was plenty good. The “distance to turn” display in the upper left corner of the screen listed with arrows how many lanes to the interchange and which lanes you may want to be in. It also listed the lanes not to be in as you transitioned from one highway ramp onto another highway. It was good to have advance notice that the right lane could not continue and you required to move left before it got crowded.

I’d say purchase this unit and help me find Karen!

I have had no reset issues and use the unit six to eight hours per day. This isn’t to say it has not been an issue with others though.

10/18/08

I found the neatest thing on this unit today. I tapped the car on the screen while I drived and noticed every not many seconds the screen updated with the exact address I has been located. I could see the street I was on, the numerical place, and I could see the addresses going up or down as I traveled. Also it showed the elevation changing up or down. I used this exact screen many times when stopped to mark places I wanted to save to favorites but never on the go. I am not sure exactly how one could use this info but I thought it interesting.

I have had more experience with the traffic choice now. I have found it useful throughout rush hour. Only once. So far, has a delay been so serious that it changed my routing automatically. But, throughout that occasion I felt gratified in that I has been guided off the freeway before other drivers. From my detour path I ended up with a view of a bumper to bumper full stop on the highway that has been backed up for miles. To be honest, after a while you take the traffic icon for granted till it turns yellow or red. The yellow icon does not change things by routing, just info about how many minutes the delay will be.

I can say that on occasion the info isn’t exactly timely. A yellow display may show and when I reach the place the traffic can be moving more normal or a little slower than indicated. The minutes of delay indicated looks not too far off though and arrival times are pretty correct.

Other that no connection view’s in the Phoenix area now I am still thrilled with the 755t. Garmin support is working on a free update I spoke with them for the connection view.

Additional questions have been ask and answered in the comments section if you could like to read more.

        Pros/Cons & Compare to Navigon 2100 max,
December 28, 2008

By&nbsp,Young Professional Silver Spring, MD United States See all my reviews

Background: I had generally rented vehicles with a GPS till newly my frequency of travel to unfamiliar cities had reached a point where it made sense to buy my own. I wasn’t looking for a GPS to play MP3s, make phone calls, take photos, or fill out my taxes. I simply care about its capability to navigate from point A to B and to get around an unfamiliar place, and so I will bound this review to those features. I tried two devices: the Garmin nuvi 755T same as the 765T minus the Bluetooth and the much cheaper Navigon 2100 max with the bundle that included lifetime traffic.

Garmin Nuvi 755T

Pros:

Could use all the features right out of the box

Always got me from Point A to Point B

Map pleasing to my eyes

The lane guidance is useful, but not as useful as I thought it could be I find that keep right/left voice commands can stand alone.

Considerable more Points of Interest than Navigon 2100 Max. Also many more Points of Interest groups and the capability to simply enter a group if it is not listed and still get positive results e.G., Salons or Dance Studios weren’t groups, but I entered them and the device retrieved many close alternatives you may also search in a different city.

Really good recalculation, it does not waste time just trying to get you back to the original path if a different path from your current place is better. It also recalculates at blazing speeds I had a new path before I made it until the end of a foot block.

Text to Voice is really good far more useful than I could guessed. This really lets you to keep your eyes on the road and gives you peace of mind that you are turning in the right place.

Very useful visual layout showing direction of the turn and the street onto which you may want to turn but the voice prompts, particularly with Text to Voice, are so good you never have to look at the display.

Local speed bound generally posted with your current speed close more useful than I imagined

Good volume and easy to change volume while in use.

Easy to turn on or off with an external power switch.

The traffic feature was very useful and the info was easy to access throughout use. The much discussed ads won’t be an issue for you, trust me.

The 3D navigation produced a nice view, but honestly, in weird regions with tall buildings, I did not find this feature to be of any extra value.

Okay, But may be Better:

The screen may be more responsive, but it is many better than the Navigon 2100 Max.

The device did not generally properly find me this may be evaded by turning it on and setting the path about 45 seconds before really leaving.

The power source plugs directly into the mounting cradle, but it is still such a chore to take off the device from the cradle pressing a button on the bottom on the cradle, which is mounted on a moving ball, while tilting the device forward that the time benefit of a direct cradle plug in is lost.

Cons:

The turn warning distance is way too short only 0.2 miles

There’s no capability to exclude specific streets from a path you can set it to avoid highways, tolls, etc. Though.

Initial estimate of arrival time was a complete farce in every single test. It estimated a regular 45 minute trip to be only 25 minutes and pushed back the estimated arrival time almost every minute never reflecting the correct arrival time till I was at the last destination. Easily bested in this group by the much cheaper Navigon 2100 Max.

Navigon 2100 Max

Pros :

Always got me from Point A to Point B without deep confusion

Always properly located me

As in the Garmin Nuvi 755T, the lane guidance is useful, but not as useful as I thought it could be I find that keep right/left voice commands can stand alone.

Good turn warning distance 0.5 miles

The recalculating is fast, but not as fast as the Garmin Nuvi 755T

Ability to exclude specific streets from path a hidden feature: after the path is firstly calculated, open the turn by turn and simply x out the streets you do not want to use.

As in the Garmin Nuvi 755T, the Text to Voice is really good far more useful than I could guessed. This really lets you to keep your eyes on the road and gives you peace of mind that you are turning in the right place.

Very useful visual layout showing direction of the turn and the street onto which you may want to turn but the voice prompts, particularly with Text to Voice, are so good you never have to look at the display.

Warnings when speeding And the capability to set how far above the speed bound separately for city streets and highways causes the warning

Ability to have local speed bound either shown constantly or when a speed warning is triggered

Good volume and easy to change volume while in use

Initial estimate of arrival time dependable. Estimated a regular 45 minute trip to inside one minute and pushed back estimated arrival time only once adding a minute.

Easy to turn on or off with an external power switch.

The traffic feature was very useful and the info was easy to access throughout use.

Okay, But may be Better:

Screen sensitivity

It on occasion took a couple of minutes to firstly find me, but was generally spot on when it did.

The power supply is plugged into the device which is mounted on a cradle, but the cradle gives such restricted range of motion that it is hard to get the device in the most wanted position and I has been forced to accept it slanting somewhat throughout every use.

Cons:

Thin Points of Interests more vital than I thought and no capability to search groups not already listed a real problem. You also must choose a city every time you search, it does not just automatically pull up close places like the Garmin Nuvi 755T.

It’s hard to see ALL of the display icons as well as info on speed and your current speed

The dull, usually gray, maps with an orange path display are hard on eyes.

The keyboard takes up only half the screen making it chore to type in anything. This is particularly problematic when trying to switch states or from letters to numbers or vice versa as these display buttons are very narrow and it was hard to choose them without long fingernails.

The recalculation kept trying to send me back to the original path if it was not the best. As an example, it took the device 15 minutes to stop trying to reroute me to 16th St. In DC after I had purposely driven up Connecticut Ave. Had I taken its suggested rerouting thus backtracking, my trip could have taken 20 minutes longer.

You can not use all the features out of the box. I has been forced to register the device and supply an email address to use lifetime traffic and new maps features but, in all fairness, you may be able to opt out of spam, and I have still to get an unwanted email.

Conclusion:

The Garmin Nuvi 755T was about $350 versus the $160 for the Navigon 2100 Max with lifetime traffic included. I think both devices performed solidly, but the edge can only be given on personal preference. All said, the Navigon 2100 Max is most likely the better value for the buck, but such a declaration is relative to what is vital to you. I personally went with the Garmin Nuvi 755T because: 1 the map coloring and icon size was easy on the eyes, 2 it was much easier to type on the Garmin Nuvi 755T, 3 the number of Points of Interest, and the capability to type in your group, are of specific importance to me, and 4 I personally find not losing time on rerouting to be worth the extra costs. Hope this helps.

Best GPS I Have Used Worth the Investment,
December 3, 2008

By&nbsp,AA Northern Illinois See all my reviews

After much research I bought the Garmin Nuvi 755T movable car GPS device. It lived up to my expectations in every way after using it for a week. It was greatly used throughout a 250 mile day trip to Milwaukee from suburban Chicago. I felt very confident driving around in unfamiliar territory.

Sattelite load is quick almost instant except for 1 instance where it took about a minute.

Traffic alert and map showed congestion and offered the choice to go around.

The selected routed for regions I’m familiar with were almost same to the ones I have driven over the years.

The dislay is bright, clear and updates quickly. I didn’t experience any sluggishness.

The lane help works on some number of exits in the Chicago area not any in the Milwaukee area. These snapshots appeared at just the right time to show the correct exit lane depending on the highlighted road sign. I imagine this will become available for many more highways as maps are updated.

Mounting and connecting were 1st rate the windshield suction worked well as did the unit power adapter and cable.

I didn’t use FM transmitter I see no have to do this.

The street names and voice commands were deafening, clear and in lots of time to navigate properly.

I am not displeased about any attribute of this device. I greatly recommend it.

REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

This is my 1st car GPS, and I did many of research before settling on the Garmin 780. I live in the Washington DC Metro area, so all of the extra features work here. Upon its arrival, I downloaded and installed the new Garmin WebUpdater v.2.41 , then updated my 780 from software variant 2.50 to 2.90. I also updated the Bluetooth and other firmware, with the languages that I use. This all worked flawlessly in a Windows XP virtual machine on a Linux host. FWIW, the 780 will charge off of the supplied USB cable.

The 780 assumed the needed satellites in just some minutes when 1st activated, and does so in less than a minute for successive activations. I found the screen light to be good for both day and night. I am using the 780 with the Garmin movable Friction Mount. Smashing windows and stealing GPS devices is the sport of choice in the DC Metro area, so I wanted no evidence of a GPS extant when I left the car. The friction mount works perfectly on my Honda Accord dashboard and stores easily in the center console, leaving no trace of a GPS behind. Cool. The 780 easily fits in a shirt pocket, so it is not needed to leave it in the car.

I tested the 780 now by driving throughout rush hour to a residence across the river in a tangle of park roads off of the beaten track, then returning at night. The Garmin had no trouble creating a fast path to the destination that bypassed most of the heavy traffic throughout rush hour. On my return, I bypassed a turn on its favored routing. It recalculated a new path in less than a second which was the exact right answer. The new path was not a recapture of the original path, which was not possible from that place, but an completely new path. The routes it picked were proper for the times of day traveled, which may be a daunting task here if you do not know which roads go which direction throughout the proper rush hour. DC is a infamously hard area to navigate, but so far the Garmin looks up to the challenge.

I found the volume of the interior speaker to be more than adequate with the radio, air conditioning, and windshield wipers going. Voice notifications led forthcoming turns by an adequate total, and the voice prompts generally helped me get into the correct lanes in lots of time for forthcoming turns. Throughout a especially difficult section where some number of big roads converge on a bridge, then diverge on the other side, the Garmin gave nearly constant proper guidance to ensure that I took the correct forks and turns. I was quite impressed.

The Bluetooth paired quickly with my Motorola Razr V3. It provided its PIN code at the proper time. The phone functions work great and it is easy to hear over the 780 speaker. The party on the other side of the phone said that I sounded like I was in a tunnel, which is common for remote devices for autos. I have another BT hands free device and it garnered the same comments. The Garmin’s on screen phone cues make hands free easy.

Activation of the MSN Direct service was simple over the Net. On initial activation of your free three month trial, they offer a 6 month extension for $9.95 which gets you to nine months of service total for less than $10 a good deal. MSN Direct info took a while to load the initial info, but then it said that in the fast Start pamphlet. Once loaded, the traffic, weather, and news worked great. Gas prices were behind by some number of days, which is an eternity these days. My favorite and cheapest station was not listed.

Overall, I am happy with the 780. I will be working it out heavily in the coming weeks, as well as on a road trip to another city with MSN Direct service. I can not believe that I waited this long to take the plunge to a GPS device for my car. Though I am a master with maps, the Garmin suggested a smart routing that I didn’t earlier discover on my own. From what I have seen so far, the 780 will be a greatly valued addition to my road warrior kit bag. I can recommend the 780 without reservation.
REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

I bought a Sony NAVU 83T, a Garmin 680, and a Garmin 780 to compare their features and routing capability. I kept the 780 and returned the others, but it was a hard choice.

The Sony unit . At Costco, and has a 4.8″ screen 1/2″ larger!. It has one of the best user interfaces on the market, mainly caused by some things: 1 you may be able to generally get back to the map by pressing one button, despite of where you’re, 2 you may be able to generally get to the major menu by pressing one button, despite of where you’re in the menus, 3 it has a split screen function that gives you lane guidance visually so that you know which lane to get into, well before the turn, 4 it has shortcuts, for example to GO HOME you make a V form on the screen and it takes you home.No menu navigation required!

On the down side, the Sony took FOREVER to compute or re calculate routes, and in many cases I missed the newly recalculated turn because it took too long to figure it out. It also took longer routes than the Garmin, could avoid usually used roads for no obvious reason, and could not take me down roads that were shown on the map and obviously the shortest path. Last of all, the Sony took forever to get a satellite fix once turned on. And the Sony mount was soooo cool and useful! For $249 you got the cool mount and a nice carrying case. I didn’t get a chance to use the TMC traffic service.

The Garmin 680 $349 at Costco was a good device, with fast and correct routing. It found points of interest quickly and precisely the Sony frequently couldn’t find them. But, I really liked the thin size of the 780 and the fact that the antennae was fitted, so I kept the 780 in spite of the extra cost.

What do I like about the 780 and the 680:

1. The MSN Direct is useful and I use it every day for weather, news, fuel costs, and movie listings.

2. Fast path calculations.

3. I have never looked for a POI that wasn’t present.

4. The tour routes that you may download for about $12 each are cool. You may be able to take car tours of some hours that are laid out for you, telling you where to visit along the path.

5. The capability to sort points along a path is useful. If you have ten places to go in one day, enter them all in and it puts them in the most economical order.

6. It can find rest regions on interstates. The Sony couldn’t do this, which is annoying when you’re trying to figure out if you may want to stop at a gas station or wait for a rest area when you have three kids in the car on long trip.

What could I change on the 780? Many things, and most of them could cost Garmin no money to implement. They are simple fixes that they should consider!

Bad Points of the Garmin 780:

1. If I go into the menu system, I can go seven or eight layers deep to get to what I want to do. To get back to the map, I have to keep pushing the “BACK” button, up to eight times in a row, to get back to the map. Stupid!

2. If I go into a menu item and choose I am done, but do not want to push “BACK” over and over, the unit stays on the menu or submenu screen forever.

3. It could seem that on a unit this costly it may give you lane guidance. The Sony does. The Tom Tom does. Why can not this unit, at nearly double the cost?

4. When you turn off the car the unit asks if it should stay on or turn off. If you do not answer, it turns off in 30 seconds. For people who are making deliveries, or running errands, this is a real ache. It could be nice to let you to configure this once to set how long it should wait before turning the unit off options like one minute, five minutes, ten minutes, 20 minutes, for instance. This could let you to run into Kinkos and back out again without having to wait for the unit to turn back on, get a satellite bearing, , then get to its map to tell you where to go next. Simple software change!

5. It could be nice to have the unit start up on the same screen where you left off. If you were on the map screen, then it should return to the map screen. If on the weather screen, then return to the weather. I like to keep it on the weather, but I have to hit about six different buttons every time I turn the unit on to get to the weather! Simple software change!

6. Most GPS units at half this cost let you to SEE your speed, direction, and target’s relative direction while on the major map screen. This unit requires you to go to a dashboard screen to show you this info..so you must decide the map or the dashboard to view. Since many people may not like this feature, it may be configurable. Simple software change!

7. I can not seem to figure out how to show the satellite signals/connectivity. ALL units have the, though it’s just for fun.

8. For $500 the Garmin will include a carry case for the unit. They sell it small size, light weight, and its “ability to know where you were when you take it out of the cradle, to assist you find your car later”, and still do not give you way to carry it around carefully. Just about every unit on the market, starting at the $149 units, include a case!

9. The 780 doesn’t include an holders manual. You must go online to view the manual, at garmin.Com. Garmin can be surprised to know that not everyone has the internet 50 of homes don’t. Though not perfect, the Sony included a pretty complete start up guide and a CD established holders manual.

10. The display seems a cartoon movie, and that causes a lack of detail. The Sony displayed a concise map where you could really recognize road splits, acceleration lanes, etc.

11. There’s no capability to show POIs on the map. You may be able to path to one, but you can not just show them. The Sony allowed you to pick which POIs to show, and it really showed you little BP, Shell, Cracker Barrel, etc. Logos on the map so that you could know well ahead of time which POIs were near you.

12. Many units tell you how far to your next turn AND the direction you’ll be turning in. The Garmin tells you how far to the next turn, but it doesn’t tell you which way to turn till you get inside about 2/10 of a mile. So on most multi lane roads I find myself staying in the center lane as I get close so that I can go either way. It should warn you which way you’ll be turning at least some miles in advance! once you get onto any road the Sony tells you that your next turn is “LEFT 123 MILES”, and it’s generally displayed on the major map. Useful. Simple software change!

I like the unit, but I only give it three stars because of its price, its lack of common sense features, and lack of “in the box” support. It is strong points are fast, correct routing and MSN direct.
REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

I did many of research before I changed from my old Garmin c340. I think I made an excellent choice, this GPS has everything and more. I was new to traffic so I 1st tried the TomTom 920T which I did not like because of how innacurate the maps were so then I turned to Garmin and I was happy again, with the addition of news, stocks and events for the MSN direct two variant is great. I read the news once in a while is just a plain summary of what is happening not much with no pictures or anything but hey at least it gives you something else on the GPS to do. I find the mp3 functionality great the sound is deafening enough just do not put it all the way to 100 volume because you will hear static. The FM transmitter is one of the best I found on a GPS and the picture feature is great I put it in my room as an LCD screen for pictures hehehe. This GPS gives you all the directions you need pretty correct, MSN traffic needs to enhance on this, its typically delayed most of the time it tells me traffic is there but then I find no traffic why? I do not know but I can say that’s most likely 80 right on other traffic updates. I really like this product and I’m more than happy with this item, it’s now many cheaper than what I bought it for which was $700, so do yourself a favor if you want an correct, nice looking, fast GPS signal, great feature GPS get this one, I recommend it.
